How quant recruiting runs

Quant and trading firms recruit earlier than banks. Their summer internships for the following year often open in July and August, and their first-year insight programmes open with the first spring weeks in late August and September.

The process is different too. Expect online tests built on mental arithmetic, probability and sequences, then interviews that work through problems out loud, and coding for research and development roles. Firms say plainly that they hire on these, not on a CV line.

Places are few and the rolling reads are fast, which is why this list is read every one to fifteen minutes, depending on the site.

Questions

When do quant internships open?

Earlier than anything else: several trading firms open their London internships for the next summer in July and August, and most of the rest follow in September. Spring weeks and insight days for first years open from late August.

What is the difference between quant trading and quant research?

Traders make decisions in the market, often in real time, and are tested on quick mental maths and probability. Researchers build the models and signals, and are tested more on statistics, maths and coding.

Do I need to study maths or computer science?

Most successful applicants study something quantitative, but firms test ability rather than degree title. Each role's page states its own requirements.

How do I prepare for the tests?

Practise mental arithmetic and probability under time, and work through problems out loud. Our mentors sat these processes in the last year, and an hour with one is the fastest way to find out what each firm's round is really like.
