How placements work

A placement is usually a year in a firm between your second and final years, taken as part of a sandwich degree. It is paid, and at many firms it leads to a graduate offer.

Placements open on a similar timetable to summer internships, mostly in the autumn for a start the following summer, and also close when they are full. Check that your university allows a placement year before you apply.

Questions

Who can apply for a placement?

Students whose degree includes, or allows, a year in industry. Your university's placement office can confirm whether yours does.

When do placements open?

Mostly between September and December for a start the following summer, though some open later in the year.

Is a placement better than an internship?

It is longer and you do more real work, but it adds a year to your degree. Many firms offer both; the right one depends on your course and plans.
